Bernedoodle Colors

Bernedoodles are mostly known for the traditional Tri-Color coat that matches that of a Bernese Mountain Dog. Thanks to the Poodle side of their DNA, Bernedoodles can come in so many beautiful colors and patterns! We have spent significant time learning the ins and outs of coat and color genetics. Below is a general guide to what different colors look like that we produce. Not every litter we have will have every one of these colors. We always know the color possibilities with each parent pairing based on their genetic panels and list them for the planned litter.

traditional tri-color

The classic Bernese markings that everyone knows and loves!

Merle (tri and phantom)

Merle is a beautiful striking pattern created by a gene that alters the dog’s base coat color. Producing merle puppies is something we do very carefully and with a full understanding of coat genetics. When a dog has only one copy of the merle gene (as all our merle dogs/puppies do) it is perfectly safe and healthy!

Red

We love our red Bernedoodles! They can range anywhere from a light strawberry blonde, to a deep red color.

Phantom

Very similar to tri colored, just less white and more brown! Phantoms can have large abstract white markings on their chest and feet, or no white at all.

sable

Sable can have so much variation from dog to dog! At its core, it is a creamy tan/orange/blonde color with accents of darker hairs (mostly on their ears, and sometimes in other places as well). All sable coats “clear,” which describes the way their coats lighten and change from puppyhood to becoming an adult. This change happens because when they are born most of their little hairs have dark tips on them (even the hairs that are not truly dark all the way to the base). Then as their coat grows out, and especially after getting their first haircut, all those tips are trimmed off revealing their true color.

Chocolate (tri, Phantom, SABLE, RED)

A dog is Chocolate (referred to by different names depending on the breed) when their base coat color and nose color is brown instead of black! Chocolates can come in all the same color patterns as their black counterparts listed above.

Parti

“Parti” is a poodle term that means more than 50% white. Each pup is uniquely marked! The white “deletes” the color that would normally be there. Parti can happen to any of the above colors, and is a coat trait we can test for in the parents. So we always know if there is a chance of parti puppies in a litter. Now that we produce primarily multigens, we do not often have parti puppies.
